Meaningful Use Matters

Meaningful Use criteria as set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are meant to encourage patient-centered, interoperable health information exchange across provider organizations. Stage 1 objectives and measures are basic, to help providers integrate electronic record keeping into their practices. Stage 2 objectives include more expectations for health information exchange including e-prescribing, incorporating structured lab results and transmitting patient care summaries to unaffiliated providers, settings and EHR systems.
